Pride Month is an entire month dedicated to the uplifting of LGBTQ+ voices, celebration of LGBTQ+ culture and the support of LGBTQ+ rights. Throughout the month of June, there have traditionally been parades, protests, drag performances, live theater and memorials and celebrations of life for members of the community who lost their lives to HIV/AIDS.
It is part political activism, part celebration of all the LGBTQ community has achieved over the years. It’s currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. The Stonewall Uprising was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. Many cities around the world is still under the very deep pressure of homophobia, biphobia and transphobia. While some people can live out and open, some are still afraid to even talk about the possibility of them being queer.
There’s still a huge discrimination LGBTQ+ people face in their daily lives. Finding jobs, getting apartments, adopting... There are still millions and millions of people who are trying to get their voices heard. Afraid of suffering, and sometimes even death. And as long as this continues, we will continue to speak for them.
